Tips for a Stress-Free Move

After 75,000 moves, we can tell you exactly where moving days go wrong — and it is almost never the truck. It is the week before. These seven habits separate calm moves from chaotic ones.
1. Start with the rooms you ignore
Everyone packs the living room first and discovers the storage closet at 10pm the night before. Flip it: pack garages, basements and spare rooms in week one, while your energy is high.
2. Box by destination, not by origin
A box labelled “Kitchen — Open First” saves twenty minutes at the other end. Pack each box for the room it is going to, and mark one “first night” box with bedding, chargers, toiletries and coffee.
3. Photograph the fiddly stuff
Snap the back of your TV, the router cables and shelf arrangements. Rebuilding in the new place takes minutes instead of puzzling.
4. Give fragile items a double wall
Dishes travel vertically in dish barrels with dividers, never flat in big boxes. Glasses get individual wrap. If a box rattles when you shake it, repack it.
5. Book movers before you finish packing
Good crews sell out summer weekends a month ahead. Lock your date early — you can always adjust the inventory later.
